biketalk

So, I've decided to buy this bike.
I'll want to put a brake or two on there, and gotta put pedals on it. Its got a flip-flop hub. So, I'm gonna use the comments section here to ask some questions. Ned, Keith, & Jared: you guys know more about bikes than me so answer or die.

"The wheels are hand built 32 hold IRO high flange, sealed bearing hubs laced to Mavic MA3 rims. The spokes are top quality DT Swiss spokes. The wheels are straight and true as can be. This wheelset was built right and should have tens of thousands of miles in it. The wheels are very clean with no issues whatsoever. The tires are great quality Vredestein tires. The rear tire is worn, but the front one shows little wear. The cog is a 15 tooth Shimano Dura Ace cog that is virtually brand new. The lock ring is also Shimano Dura Ace and in like new condition.

The rest of the bike is comprised of top quality parts. The saddle is an excellent condition white Concor saddle (one of the most classic saddles of all time). The stem is a super nice hidden bolt Cinelli stem. The bar tape (which is wrapped for a front brake) is also Cinelli. The front chainring is a like new 39 tooth Salsa chainring. The chain is a nice Regina chain. The crankset is a great condition Campagnolo Record 170mm crankset. The bottom bracket is also Campagnolo."

So, the bars are wrapped for a front brake... I'm debating whether or not I want to put a rear on. I will ride it both free & fixed.

Any brake opinions?
V-pull?
Cantilever?

Opinions on brake levers?

I'll be doing this myself, for the first time. zuper zyched!

And, what does being wrapped for a front mean when there is no brake lever or brake on the bike?

I'm thinking of getting some SPD double sided. I'll want some shoes eventually too...what's the haps with shoes? SIDI?

Sweet nectah...
First off, I would only have a front brake. You will be riding it fixed primarily, if not always. When it is fixed your legs will act as a superior rear brake anyway. Also, if it is a track bike, it probably isn't drilled for a rear brake. At least that is how mine is. I would assume that "tape for a front brake" means there is additional space on the left handle for attaching a lever. The guy most likely had a brake on it and stripped it because he liked it, same with the pedals.
As for shoes, I have sidi and I really like them. Although make sure to get mountain bike shoes. That way the clip is inset and protected by cleets. Initially I had a pair of road shoes, and although stylin', they were a pain in the ass. It is nearly impossible to walk in a road shoe, especially on a tummy full of beer.
You also might want to look into a larger chainring. Right now I am riding a 17 back and 49 front. Kinda fast, butt supper funn. 39 is like a BMX chainring, give it a shot though.
hope this helps.

Thanks Ned.
It's a converted road bike, so there are brake-stays on the front AND back.

The more reading I've done, rear-brake might not be necessary. Also, if I don't have a rear brake will it make the flipping&flopping of the hub easier? How the fuck do you do that, anyway.

Please to explain, Keef.
Will I need some of your fancy wixards tools, I assume? Should I go buy a pack at Hands?
