Martsch Madness
I've never been a fan of Built to Spill, mainly because I've never been introduced to them properly, never owned an album, and never saw a live show, but today Doug Martsch played an unannounced in-store at the Fetus, while I was working, and he blues-jammed me away.
He sat down, and jacked-off three, or four unwritten jams, each lasted about 10 minutes. I was really impressed with what he was doing, and a little disappointed it wasn't being recorded. The stuff he was playing is much more interesting to me than anything I've heard by Built to Spill. Since the in-store wasn't advertised, there were only a handful of people there. It was a real treat to witness.
Molly Hill, now works at WEA as a college rep, or something, and she & Pam were driving Martsch, and his equiptment around all day, taking him from radio interviews, to the Fetus, and finally First Ave. I thought that was kinda funny.
This Talking Heads song has nothing to do with anything above, it's just a good song.

I too have never had a meaningful/personal relationship with Built to Spill. No albums, no shows, just good word.
But I LOVE long, unwritten jams. This past Sunday I saw a guy called GOWN do just the same on his acoustic guitar and it was RAD. I had never thought that a single guitar without a magical pedal, depending on the sheer quickness of clever fingers, carry over a long unmeditated improv, but now I know better.
I'm guessing Doug Martsch was guitarring too?
What a great beard.
He was guitaring, but he did have some pedals with him. a Wha, Digital delay, and some other thing I don't know. It sounded great. Like I said, I wish someone was recording that performance, because I'd buy a copy.
I was talking to Christopher Jensen, who is a fellow Fetus employee, and Radio K programmer. He got a chance to hang out with Doug for a few hours to get an interview, and he told me some interesting things.
First, Doug is huge basketball fan, and he believes the T-wolves need to hang on to KG. Of course.
Second, Molly was supposed to drive Doug & Christopher around, but her car was too crowded with promotional CD's, so she asked Christopher to drive. Christopher told her the he didn't have much gas, so Molly said she would get WEA to cover the cost. The gas cost was never covered.
Upon arriving to 89.3 The Current, for an interview, Molly akwardly approched the reception desk, and told the receptionist, "I'm here with Doug Martsch for a ...thing at 3 o'clock."
the receptionist replied, "What thing? who are you supposed to meet with?"
"umm...Steve"
"Ok, have a seat, and I'll let Steve know you're here."
Later, after Steve came down, and met with Doug, Molly, and Christopher, and told them that he wasn't quite sure he wanted to come out, because the receptionist phoned him, and said "there are three strange young people here to see you, and they wont tell me what it's for."
Sounds like the receptionist could have squeezed a little more info out of anyone of those 3, but Molly was the one incharge, and she is such a space cadet, that It made me laugh to hear that.
