Back To The Lake

I've lived in a lot of places growing up. Moved from Hawaii, to the Mainland, to Europe, and back to Minnesota. I have found a home in Minnesota, and I know that Minneapolis is where I'll probably seem most at home for the rest of my life.
The weather here is getting colder, and summer fun is becoming less, and less with each week.
I did a lot this summer, and feel that I have taken advantage of every little thing I wanted to accomplish. It's been a lot of good times.

This section from a 2004 Harp Magazine interview with Robert Pollard describes how I feel about MN.

Harp: You’re still living in Dayton, Ohio, where you grew up and your base throughout your Guided By Voices tenure. Have you ever considered moving to a city that’s more of a music biz hub – L.A., New York, etc.?

Pollard: Mmm… I’ve entertained the notion, but I’ve got too many friends here – we get together and drink once a week – and I also have family. I’d thought about moving to Austin for awhile. Maybe New York. But it’s cheap to live here. I just bought a new house, and I got it for, I know, one-tenth the price it would cost me on the east or west coast. But the main thing is all these buddies here that I’ve known since I was a kid. The closeness is kind of unique. People will come and hang out with us and they’ll go, “Man, I wish I still got together with my friends like this.” I’d miss that if I left.

In fact, I think [moving] is kind of a clichéd thing to do. Musicians are always saying, “I’m going to go to New York.” Or, “I’m going to Austin.” You know, to “make it” or whatever shit. I don’t need to be at the hub, and it’s kind of nice to remove yourself from that. I sometimes think that people in New York or wherever can’t see the forest for the trees. There’s too much going on. There’s nothing going on here, so it’s easier – you have more time, you’re basically by yourself. I’ve become kind of a loner, musically, and I like that. That’s one of the reasons I broke up the band. There’s nobody here to bump ideas off so I just do it myself.
