I'll Find You, And I'll Kill You
I'm currently writing a review of the latest Chad Vangaalen album Soft Airplane, which came out on Sub Pop Records early last month. I'm not usually a fan of singer/song writer types, but this guy crosses some essential boundaries that make him different from the Jason Mraz, Jose Gonzalez, Aqualung or whatever other douche dicks I don't ever need to hear. First off, he's more like Andrew Broder and the early formation of Fog, in that he is just a one man bedroom recording artist who disregards the notion that songs need to be radio friendly, pop, or even set to a verse-chorus-verse arrangement. But the thing I like best about this guy is that he tells these stories that are so sick and disturbing that they could make you gag, but he sings them with such a sweet, almost crying, falsetto that it somehow just seems human, and not at all disgusting.
Here is a video for a song from his latest album. He also did the drawings and animation by himself too.

yeah, he's got that nice smooth lumps drawing style you see quite often these days. the priest in particular is darling.
and the story fits into another style that for reason I feel like I see more and more. what is it? sort of like a flavor for folklore where a lot of times people are doomed to a fate and in the end there is nothing to do but be resigned to is because hey, it's the nature of things.
where are you writing your review and when can I check it out?
I'm writing it for Skysraper magazine. I've never seen it on shelves around Minnesota, (I also don't know where to get good music mags around here anyway) and the first time I saw the mag was when they sent me a copy that I had written 9 reviews for. It's mag is from New York, so maybe you see it around? check out their website, it looks like they've got last issues stuff up there http://skyscrapermagazine.com/
