Caruso One Liners

This kinda makes me want to watch CSI:Miami

I wonder what Frank thinks of all that.

It's the Shoes

Anyone who turns up to a game in a tuxedo after watching the Grammys on TV is always going to have my vote, but what's with the self proclaimed 'best point guard ever' and his $15 sneakers averaging a lousy 9 points and 4 assists per game this season? Making it even worse, in his last three games Stephon Marbury has scored a combined total of just 9 points - including Saturdays game where 'Starbury' didn't even attempt a single shot - and he wonders why he's still the Knicks 'escape goat'.

Meanwhile, congratulations to The BEST POINT GUARD EVER (Allen Iverson) who had one of his wisdom teeth removed earlier in the week and decided to celebrate with 45+ points in two of the weeks three games. I love this game and thanks for making me a part of your blog family.

Don't hate the player--Hate the matrix

And BAM like KAZAAM--it's on! Please welcome ladies & germs the newest "internet personality" to get out of my dreams and into my blog: Chris. Hailing from Sydney at a formidable 6'2" and about 340 lbs, our latest dreamboat's got a thing for the NBA, Phoebe Cates, and drawing pictures on his computer. He lives in Tokyo and some of you guys know him. As Jared just posted about R. Crumb I figured timing was perfect cause he's nuts about Crumb and Clowes and Comics and junk. SAY HI.

What God Does In His Free Time

I have this obsession with art work by Robert Crumb. If I see it on something, I have to pick it up, look at it, and find out what it is. That's actually how I found out about his band.

Over in France, where Crumb lives, he plays banjo, and madoline in a band called Les Primitifs Du Futur, and they just put out a new CD of music titled Wolrd Musette.
He's not the leader of the band, so that might explain why I'm not the biggest fan of this sound, but since Crumb is in the band, and it's got his art work all over it, the I figure I'll give it a shot.
Really doh, he can't go wrong. Even when he speaks French, and allows his terrible American accient to be recorded for this song, Crumb still can't go wrong.

IRAQ

is totally fucked as we all know. There's this writer Nir Rosen who is really good. He had an insightful piece in The Atlantic last year called If America Left Iraq. Hopefully the situation will change to justify a follow-up piece called "When America Leaves Iraq." He recently published a suuuuper long piece in The Boston Review that I've started reading called "Anatomy of a Civil War."Anyway, listen to the show from Monday the 27th and you'll hear his take on the situation with is fucking depressing as fuck. Here's a highlight:
NIR ROSEN: There is no solution. We’ve destroyed Iraq and we’ve destroyed the region, and Americans need to know this. This isn’t Rwanda where we can just sit back and watch the Hutus and Tutsis kill each other, and be like wow this is terrible should we do something? We destroyed Iraq. There was no civil war in Iraq until we got there. And there was no civil war in Iraq, until we took certain steps to pit Sunnis against Shias. And now it is just too late.
and
NIR ROSEN: Troop withdrawal, if I was an American, then I would want troop withdrawal, because why are Americans dying in Iraq? Every single American who dies in Iraq, who is injured in Iraq, dies for nothing. He didn’t die for freedom, he didn’t die to defend his country, he died to occupy Iraq.

Devolution Of Punk

Our generation might look back at something that happened in 1961, and naturally think, "that was long ago". At age 8, if someone would have told me about the 70's, I would have imagined that as long ago, but now I'm older, and I have a better perception of time, so I imagine the 1970's as period of time that happened just before I was born.
Just look at this film of Vince Taylor & The Playboys on French TV, in 1961.

Back then people must have loved that shit. The spastic thrust dance, and phallic guitar gestures must have blown some peoples minds. At that time, musicians weren't supposed to do that, but just four years later, Roger Daltrey would sing "I hope I die before I get old", as Pete Townsend smashed his guitar into the nearest amplifier, and just four years after that, people could expect to see a shirtless, bloodied Iggy Pop, flop around on-stage, while using whatever foul language he wanted.

I'm convinced the first punk band doesn't exist, because, like everything else, punk evolved from what came before it.

Here's Eddie Cochran doing his song Somethin' Else in the late 50's

Here's Sid Vicious doing that same song, almost 20 years later.

Both Eddie Cochran, and Sid Vicious died at age 21.

B-Girlz

Brazilian Girls are playing at the FineLine tonite. Should be a hot show to see. I missed them last year, in September, when they played at the Varsity Theater. Justin, Derek, and I sold our tickets, and got drinks at a Dinkytown bar.

You ever notice how Sabina Sciubba never shows her eyes? Anyone know Thea? She wears that same lace shit over her eyes like she's on stage singing with Brazilian Girls. Yikes!

Checkout this NYTimes Interview to find out more about how Brazilian Grils formed, and what's behind the covered eyes.

Here are some songs...er...rather one song remixed. I think this Riton remix is good shit. In fact, I also have some other stuff by Riton that hits just as hard.

I threw up this acapella, in case any of you wanna take a stab at yr own remix of this track. I'd like to hear it.

If I Never What? You

A couple weeks ago, I found a song on some other mp3 blog, and have listened to it about a hundred times. This Cap'n Jack song is awesome, but it's very somber, and takes a slow night to sink in. Actually, It's maybe best played alone, than in the company of others.
There wasn't much listed about this artist, and I couldn't find anything on Cap'n Jack. You try, it's hard.

CRAYONS!

There are certain memories that begin to fade as I get older. The joyful memories I have for crayons came rushing back to me as I watched this video. As a kid I had a lot of great times holding crayons, drawing with them, melting them on lightbulbs, or just breathing deep to the smell of a fresh pack.

Remember, never forget, always remember.

Guys I made a brief mix, it's not all that interesting. It's theme is ELECTRIC PRIMATIVE. Jared I used one of them Congotronixtraxx.

L'Anarchie Pour Le U.K.

A week ago, I got the Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle on DVD, and it had me really into wanting to find out more about the Sex Pistols. I was first impressed with Malcolm McClaren's take on the band. In the film Malcolm makes the band seem like something he single handedly manufactured to create chaos in the music industry, and get as much money of out it as possible. I wanted to find out more about the band, so I did a lot of reading, and ordered a few things online.

I got the soundtrack for the Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, because it has this disco medley of some Sex Pistols songs. The Black Arabs - Anarchy In The U.K./God Save The Queen/Pretty Vacant/No One Is Innocent (medley) (zShare). There's also this French accordion version of L'anarchie Pour Le U.K. that was used in the film.

I thought I'd buy Sid & Nancy on DVD, so I could watch it, and get over any curiosity I may have had. Just as I suspected, the film sucks. It might accurately show how annoying the two were, but it's a waist of time for anyone that is trying to find out any truths about the Sex Pistols, or Sid & Nancy as real people.

Here's a Sid Vicious interview on video. The guys is so fucked up, that he's actually falling asleep in the middle of answering questions. I think it's in the film
The Filth & The Fury, but I'm not sure, I haven't see that yet. Still waiting ofr my DVD in the mail.

NXNW

Last night I started watching Alfred Hitchcock's North By Northwest. Although I enjoy taking my time with older feature-length films, I'll probably finish this one tonight.
I have only seen a few Hitchcock films. Psycho, Vertigo, and Rear Window are the few I know I've seen.
Also, Cary Grant is one of those old school film actors that a lot of people hold with high regard, and yet I never watched any of his films, until this summer when I saw Bringing Up Baby and The Philadelphia Story at Music & Movies in the Park.

I wont ruin any details of North By Northwest, just in case any of you haven't seen it, but I do recommend watching it.

I started writing for the Type In Music blog Julie started up, and over the last week, or so, I've been putting up duplicate posts. I going to stop doing that now.
I'll post stuff here, but you wont find it at Type In Music, same goes for what I post on Type In Music.

I added a link to Type In Music, so it's easy to find.

Swedish Timberlake

I was just talking with a co-worker about days of the past. Before my time. It was common for a band, or musician to release a song, and have a lot of other big name bands, or musicians do a cover of that song for release on their own record.
Bands were doing hit covers of Dylan songs as soon as Dylan was putting them out himself. To me, that shows other musicians are out there, not just working on their own shit, but actually listening to what others are putting out.
Now days music lawyers don't fuck around, and laws are being made to limit the use of other peoples work, so there is less artistic license to legally work with.
However, a similar type of artistic community still exsists today in rap music. Everyday people are working on mix tapes, and recording their own flow over a beat some other cat released. It's fresh, and it promotes everything it touches.

The other day I came across a cover of Justin Timberlake's single My Love, done by Swedish pop musician Mirat Bergman, and I just started thinking about how cool that is she did it. Even if I don't like her version on the song, and I don't, she still managed to get me to know who she is.
