Subway Guy's Sample of the Week

MF DOOM has been a bit dormant the last couple years, but I read a good interview with him in Wax Poetics a couple months back and he assures everyone that he's in a good place right now, and always working on some new music.

MF DOOM - Deep Fried Frenz

Ronnie Laws - Friends & Strangers
(check the sample at 1:07)

Whodini - Friends

Ooh, and while on the subject of MF Doom, I should mention that I just watched the movie Gladiator a couple weeks ago, and there is a part where Russell Crowe puts on a the MF Doom mask to fight with.

I got pretty excited about that!

Trolls & Wizards & Fairy Kings

None of these make an appearance in the third animation for Hauschka, premiering on Pitchfork.tv today, but calling Bryum & Kapok: A Lilt the 'cutest woodland-creature gathering this side of "David the Gnome"' can't help but warm our hearts.

Pitchfork is also running all three in succession today as a special for the premiere. So if you'd like a refresher on the first two go here.

I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin...

So from that Debarge video, I started cruisin' old Lakeside jams and came across this Cameo cut, and I couldn't help but notice the striking resemblance between homeboy and Kanye's new look. So I put this little piece of art together.

If he thought he had the pipes, it's a lock he would wear that cut-off shirt today. Sorry, not trying to be all about Kanye, I swear.

Somethings to read.

I found this site a while back called givemesomethingtoread which I thought was a great, if somewhat literal, marriage of name and concept. I thought some of you the Wire fans might be interested in this bizarre case of Baltimore drug dealers trying to dodge jail with a crack-pot legal loophole ginned-up by white supremacists in the hills of the ol' south. HERE

And as a bonus... you know that part in the Talmud where it talks about the proper ratios for dividing up estates? Right, we all learned about it in Hebrew School in those boring Estate-law classes. Well, if you like game-theory, this one's for you buds. HERE

Believe me when I say, "I f*%ked a mermaid"

This was on Saturday Night Live last week, and it's probably the best use of T-Pain I've heard ever. BTW, this HULU version is edited, but you should watch the PA version here on YouTube.

DON'T

It's been about a half a year since i looked at the Vice DOs & DON'Ts, so I thought they'd have some shit stored up that would blow my funny bone, but I was wrong. They're pretty much shooting blanks over there.
This is a DON'T with a caption reading "Vrum, vrum, vrubububububababam eeeeeeeerrmrummrumm eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer- huhmeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeerrr- huhmeeeeeeeeeeeeerr -ERRRRRRRRRRRRRK!"

Subway Guy's Sample of the Week

In 1972, the Canadian rock/pop group Skylark released their song "Wildflower", which went to Number Eight on the Billboard Top Ten and sold over a million copies.

And in 1973, soul-jazz saxophonists Hank Crawford cut an album for CTI titled Wildflower that included a cover version of the Skylark hit.

Many years later, Hank Crawford's version of "Wildflower" went on to be sampled by these rapper artists listed below.

Tupan Shankur - Shooty gonna see a Doug
Him'n'Them - Know Anne Riller?
Kennye Wess - Take It Slow

Grammys Stink & Yukmouth's Smoke-A-Thon

The Grammys were last night, and I tried to watch it. I went back and forth, and it was nothing but terrible performance after terrible performance. Not only that, its just a bunch of artist doing terrible shtick (JT explaining what a General Store is... A store that sells general goods...)

Anyway, my point. I saw this video today. Jay-Z, Kanye, TI, Lil Wayne & some 11 month pregnant woman. I saw a still before watching it, and I thought this was gonna be good. It wasn't. It's fucking awful. How do you fuck this up? Do rap concerts just suck in general? Cause, come to think of it, I've only been to like 2 or 3 that I thought were awesome, and it was all guys I had never heard of at the time.

Part II
This video, however, rocks. I watched of these videos before I decided to find out who this guy is. Turns out he is one of the members of Luniz. I find it ironic how much he talks about fake-ass weed smokers only smoking dime bags and not out of "turkey bags" when his claim to fame is a song about putting down $5 for herb...

NSFW Warning: Excessive use of swears & Negro Modelos.

UPDATE: I had to add this one too, so over the top

Southern Soul

By request for Kent. It's a grower! hehehe

Stars, just like us!

Do you know the magazine US Weekly? Do you know about the 'Just Like US' feature in that magazine? That's where they print photos of celebrities behaving like regular old, boring people (like you and me) doing regular old, boring stuff. I must say, I found the one below to be a little offensive.

Lovers Gonna Love

Haters gonna hate, lovers gonna love, I don't even want none of the above. Hey, Valentine's is just a week away, and since I'm still thinking about music to play at my Valentine's DJ night at Bev's Wine Bar, I thought I'd put together this compilation of songs that fit the theme in one way or another. It starts off with a cutesy song by The Knife from Sweden, then gets into a nice little clump of songs that are swinging and exotic, then into a couple classic country tunes, then on to some R&B. Since it begins with an "Electronic" song, I went ahead and ending the set with a sort of floating ambient tune by Cut Copy from Melbourne.

Drunk History

I'm sure you guys probably know about this already, and for all i know one of you dudes already posted one of these on the blog already. But if you don't know about Drunk History, then you're in for a treat, because it's just people being drunk, and telling historical accounts that are flawed and half gibberish. This one is about Benjamin Franklin, and it stars Jack Black.

Drinking Out Of Cups

Sorry if this is a repost, because it turns out this thing is a year and a half old already, but I was just overhearing some people talking about this as they were watching it on their laptop at a bar, and i could hear the audio playing but couldn't see the video. It sounded pretty funny, like some random stream of conscious non-sense that may be the voice of comedian Jon Benjamin (fugget-a-buddies), but that's all i knew. The people at the bar just kept saying it was made by some dude on acid. The video isn't funny, but the voice kinda is. it's interesting to say the least.

Somehow I was able to come across it on the internet now, and found out the real deal with this thing. It's fucking Dan Deacon, that Wham City Baltimore guy that makes weird half listenable music and throws crazy concerts where he lets everyone on stage and the whole shit is chaos. Since Deacon is involved, this Youtube video got a write-up on Pitchfork, where it's described as a recording Deacon made long ago, and now Liam Lynch, the creator of goof-off masterworks such as "United States of Whatever" and "The Sifl & Olly Show" made this video to it as a labor of love.

Kanye. Behind the Glory...

Alright... I don't know if you guys have checked it out, but I go to Kanye West's Blog regularly. He puts up some sweet stuff related to fashion, music, architecture, technology, etc. しかし、 he gets on these fucking tangents every once and awhile where he thinks he is super human. I like the guy. I think he is a true talent, and he works his ass off and has the ability to produce amazing material. I don't know if you guys anal-eyze his albums too much, but I would say he bats .500 for the most part. He can make some SERIOUS club bangers and also shows signs of a genius. His last two albums though... I mean, I get it, he's experimenting. I don't think that doing your whole album on vocoder should be consider groundbreaking anymore, especially when everyone in the Top 40 seems to be doing a single now using the same method. I do, however, applaud him for committing to the whole format of the album, and not just doing a Lil' Wayne style track or two for the shit of it.

I guess what I'm getting to, is that I see the potential to be extremely influential and at the same time someone who is terrified. I have no doubt in my mind that he will be in the record books as a contributor to music history, but I feel like he has the potential to do more than what he has. His early work on Jay-Z's albums was outstanding. Nobody (sans Jay-Z) saw this guy coming, and he proved himself as a pinnacle of Hip-Hop & Pop music.

My question is, after reading this recent post of his on his blog, what do you think this guy's future will be? Will he be a considered an pillar, innovator or flop of this genre of music? He obviously wants to branch out, and I applaud him for that. Fashion & design are obvious interests of his. So where does he end up? Anyways, read his own words & decide.
